Treat Ball: A Guide for Cats and Small Dogs

A treat ball is a toy your pet rolls around to get kibble out of it. To choose the right model for your cat or small dog, start by looking at its size, the type of food to use and the way your companion likes to play.

How do you choose a kibble dispenser ball?

  • Check the size: the toy must not be small enough to be swallowed. No single model suits every animal.
  • Look at the opening: dry kibble needs to go in and come back out. If it gets stuck, don't keep trying with that kibble size.
  • Watch how your pet behaves: a rolling ball is not a chew toy. If your pet bites it hard enough to damage it, take it away.
  • Think about cleaning: pick a toy you can empty of leftover food and clean on the inside.

Is the Pattoune ball right for your pet?

The Pattoune model is a red, faceted ball made of soft TPE, 8 cm in diameter. It is designed for cats and small dogs. Diameter alone isn't enough: also make sure your companion can't fit the whole ball in its mouth. This model is not meant for large dogs.

How do you introduce the toy for the first time?

  1. Pick a clear space where the ball can roll freely.
  2. Show the toy to your pet and let them explore it at their own pace.
  3. Add a few pieces of dry kibble that fit through the opening.
  4. Gently roll the ball to show them how it works.
  5. Stay with your pet during the session and stop if they get frustrated or start damaging the toy.

What kibble should you put in the ball?

Use dry kibble that passes easily through the opening. Start with a small amount to check that it comes out when the ball rolls. The product page doesn't say whether this model works with wet food or paste.

Can you leave the ball with your pet while you're out?

We recommend supervised use only. No toy is indestructible. Check its condition before each session and remove it if it's torn or if pieces are coming off.

How do you clean the Pattoune ball?

Remove any leftover kibble, wash the ball in lukewarm water, then let it dry before refilling it. The product page doesn't state that it is dishwasher safe.

What if my cat or dog isn't interested?

Don't force it. Offer a short session at another time and show them again how the ball releases a piece of kibble. Interest varies from one animal to another; this toy doesn't guarantee your pet will play with it for long.
